Cheese Date Turnovers: A Traditional Holiday Treat

Sweet and Savory Cheese Date Pastry

Several variations of sweet and savory cheese date pastries have been used for creating exquisite tea biscuits or cookies for Christmas and fancy teas. The combination of a cheddar cheese dough and sweet date mixture is a flavor sensation.   Cheese date biscuits or cookies have dates or a date filling cooked in a cheesy dough.

Cheese Date Goodies

I used to make what we called cheese date goodies. My recipe is bit different from most I have found recently. Chopped dates are simmered in brown sugar and water until a smooth paste-like mixture is reached. A dough made with sharp cheddar and cayenne pepper will add a savory flavor to the sweet date mixture.   The date mixture is pressed between a cheese biscuit like a little date  turnover.   It has been awhile since I made cheese date goodies, a favorite holiday treat that my daughter especially loves. It’s always good to discover new recipes, but sometimes tradition rules.  I am surprising her this year with cheese date goodies.
